A-Z of Knitting

R is for:

Ripping:  No not the kind of ripping where you get all Hulk on the thing and rip it in half; this is another word for frogging. To pull out your needles and simply pull on the yarn until it all comes apart. Sometimes these things are inevitable; especially if your knitting attacks. Ripping can be a good thing- it’ll help you learn from your mistakes, make you more cautious when knitting it the second time, or, if you’re anything like me, can make you realize the value of a lifeline.

R is also for:

Raglan: It’s a sleeve type- mostly used for seamless pieces because they have regular increases at the yoke that makes the piece get large enough to fit over the shoulders. Most store-bought sweaters are made in this fashion. When I finish the cobblestone, I’ll let you know how doing a raglan sleeve backward goes… this sounds ominous.

Q is for

Quitting: Please don’t do it. This isn’t what you really want to do, you know it. Give it some space and let the knitting calm down for a bit– stop its temper tantrum– and it’ll be ready to be knit up.

Q is also for:

Quiet: Lace knitting more than likely requires this. Anything with a chart or complex pattern requires more attention. This does not mean one can watch a Ron White special and be able to pay attention to that lace shawl. Take some time, chill out in your room and pay attention to that chart until it’s memorized. Or just don’t do lace knitting– then you’ll never have a need for seclusion!

A-Z of Knitting (IS BACK!)

5 07 2011

It’s been a very long time since I last wrote one of these so I figured I’d finish the set and start over again! So it’ll be a good way to keep the blog alive while I am doing nothing interesting concerning knitting.

P is for:

Presents: Let’s face it, non-knitters don’t know what to buy their knitterly counterparts even if we tell them to buy us yarn, gift cards, needles etc (usually because they think we have too much already). I had an ex boyfriend who refused to buy me anything knitterly. This is probably why he’s now my ex boyfriend.

P is also for:

Purl: It’s one of the two main stitches. I hate purling, mostly because of its awkward positioning with my hands. It just becomes futzy and I don’t particularly enjoy doing it. Though Purls make some of the prettier stitches. K1P1 ribbing is my favorite. It’s stretchy and purdy.

O is for Open Knitting- use a larger needle on a thin weight yarn and you get a more lac-y outcome!

P is for Purl- Second to the knit, it’s the easiest stitch you’ll learn. Mix the knit and purl and you can rule the knitting world!

P is also for Patience- You’ve got to have it when working on something large

M is for Mom- She’s the one who taught me to knit, she’s there to sympathize with me when a project goes awry and she helps keep the balance in a crazy knitting world

M is also for Multiple projects
- Every crafter has them! The more the merrier!

M is also for Mean yarn- You spent the money on it and now it’s failing you. Make something simple and painless out of it and give it to someone. They’ll never know how much grief it gave you!

N is for New Stuff- It’s so thrilling! My mom always laughs and gives me a look when I come home with a bag from loop or Joann Fabrics…

K is for Keeping it- It’s not selfish! You put a lot of work into it… savor the experience!

K is also for Knit
- The first think you’ll learn- Knits for in the back of the stitch. You can do anything with a knit stitch!

L is for Llama- Who knew their fur could be so darned comfy and soft! Pick up some Llama or their (cousin?) Alpaca today and you won’t be sorry!

I is for Inspiration- It’s a requirement if you ever want to create something you love.

J is for jealousy- Wishing you could have that awesome tri-colored vertical stripe scarf you saw on TV? Try to take another approach to it and make it your own- that way you can say it was inspired by another thing and be even happier with it.

G is for Garter Stitch- EASY!

G is also for Giant Projects- Take them in stride. They can sometimes seem daunting but if you stick with it, you’ll be finished in no time!

G is also for Gifting- It’s sometimes hard to let go of the item you put so much work and love into, but they’ll love it as much as you do.

H is for Hate- Sometimes you just gotta hate it. If it hates you, hate it back! Eventually the yarn will change its mind and you’ll be able to finally make something pretty

E is for Extras- Never know what to do with them? Wiat until you have a ton of almost the same gauge, then make something warm and fuzzy- like a blanket. Even though it’ll look insane, it’ll be something you made with your own two hands.

F is for Frogging- It’s so sad when you have to take everything apart… but it’s sometimes a necessary evil.

F is also for Friends- Pass the disease! Show someone else how to knit!
